Abstract

The present study was to observe the change in RNA and protein metabolism of the carbon tetrachloride induced cirrhotic liver in rats.
Sprague-Dowley rats were injected subcutaneously twice weekly with a 50% solution of carbon tetrachloride in olive oil for 13 weeks. Twenty rats developed severe cirrhosis of the liver were divided to two group and injected with L-lysine-^(14)C and orotic acid-^(14)C for the measurement of the incorporations.
The incorporation of L-lysine-^(14)C into liver protein decreased by 33% and that of orotic acid-^(14)C into total and nuclear RNA was reduced by 43% and 48% respectively in carbon tetrachloride induced cirrhotic liver.
The above result demonstrated that the RNA synthesis was more significantly decreased than protein synthesis in cirrhotic liver induced by a long term administration of carbon tetrachloride.
